Correspondence between Salvador Gil Vernet and Santiago Ramón y Cajal

SGV’s early research on the autonomic nervous system led to his discovery, in 1919, of the inferior mesenteric nervous ganglia (The abdomen and pelvis sympathetic nerves in the human foetus) and thereafter, his anatomical work would focus on the pelvic autonomic nervous system (hypogastric and pelvic plexuses). Given the complexity of its intricate arrangement in adults, compared to that observed in the foetus, he asked Mr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal for help.

We were aware of the correspondence between both researchers and had the typewritten reply from the great histologist but not the letter he sent to SGV in October 1925.

We have finally obtained the two original letters hereby displayed and made available to readers.
