Salvador Gil Vernet at the 34th Annual EAU Congress held in Barcelona, 15-19 March 2019

As part of the EAU19 Congress held in Barcelona, 15-19 March 2019, Dr JM Gil-Vernet Sedó co-authored the “Historical Exhibition Brochure. Spanish Contributions to Urology” and took part as a guest speaker of the EAU History Office, in the “Spanish contributions to Urology” session. His conference title was: Salvador Gil Vernet’s “Patología Urogenital” (1944) and medical illustration in Urology. He spoke about the work of medical illustrators, artists who, armed with quills, pencils and brushes, made the publication of the work titled “Urogenital Pathology” (1944-1955) possible. An arduous task that took 11 years. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first volume of “Prostate Cancer”. Among the non-professional medical illustrators, we have been able to identify 41 students who drew between 1940 and 1952, and among the professionals, Rafael Alemany, occasionally accompanied by his son José Alemany and Francisco Nuñez, who were hired by the Barcelona Faculty of Medicine. Today, all these illustrations, 170 in total, are part of the Salvador Gil Vernet Collection of Urological Drawings.

Dr JM Gil-Vernet also presented a poster showing the projection of the illustrations published in “Urogenital Pathology” (1944) and in “Morphology and Function of the vesico-prostato-urethral musculature”. Several of F. Núñez’s drawings were also published in the book titled “Glenn’s Urologic Surgery” (2016), in “Atlas of Robotic Prostatectomy” (2012) and in “Campbell-Walsh Urology” (2016).
